 The Evolution of Modern India Art


In the British colonial India, the intention of the missionaries was to spread Chirstian religion and involve the Indians in the English language, culture and art. The art influenced by the British was spread over India in the early years of 20th century. The modern India art movement in Indian painting have began when a few artist learnt from eminent artist of the west but their creation was unique and contained their own religious line of thinking.

   Raja Ravi Varma is considered as the father of Indian art . He drew on western traditions and techniques including oil painting but stories of Ramayana,Mahabharata and social perspective have been clearly reflected in his paintings.

   The modern Indian art movement in Indian painting is considerd to have begun in Calcutta ( now Kolkata) in the late nineteenth century. E.B. Havell raised the movement of Indian art. He was appointed as the superintendent of Calcutta Art School. Abanindranath Tagore was an important partner in Havell's campaign and it succeeded by the Santiniketan School, led by Rabindranath Tagore.
